The No-Nonsense Guide to Perfume Care

Perfume costs good money. When we spend our hard earned cash on a nice bottle, we want it to last. We have all bought things on a whim, only to watch them go to waste. Makeup sits in pans until it dries out. Skincare expires in the back of a drawer.

Treat your perfume like something precious. Keep it safe and warm.

Here is how to protect your bottles and make your collection last.

Light and Heat Kill Fragrance

Sunlight destroys perfume. UV rays break down the complex oils inside the glass. If you keep your bottles on a sunny windowsill or a bright vanity, the scent will spoil faster.

Heat does the same thing. Warm rooms and fluctuating temperatures ruin the formula.

Bathrooms are the worst place to store perfume. The steam from hot showers creates high humidity. Moisture ruins the outer packaging and can seep past the atomizer.

Find a dark, cool spot in your bedroom. A closet shelf, a drawer, or the back of a cupboard works best.

Keep the Box

The easiest way to block out light is to keep your perfume in its original box.

Brand packaging is designed to protect the glass during shipping. It works just as well on your shelf. Slide the bottle back into its box after you use it.

If you threw the box away, use a spare shoebox or a metal tin. Cover the box to keep out dust and light.

Care for Travel Atomizers and Decants

Smaller atomizers and decants are great for travel, but they leak air easily. Air is another enemy of perfume. Oxygen oxidizes the liquid and changes the smell over time.

If you use a small travel spray, check that the cap seals tightly. Keep your decants in the same dark, cool conditions as your full sized bottles. Do not leave them rolling around in a hot car or a daily handbag where they bake in the sun.

Take care of what you own so you do not have to buy it twice. Use what is already in your house, store your bottles in the dark, and enjoy every last drop.
